Junior High Performing Arts
Band
Four levels appropriate to age and skill level.
Beginning: Developing basic performance techniques; music reading.
Intermediate Band: Developing basic fundamental technical skills and musical knowledge.
Concert: Performing group primarily for seventh and eighth grades. Always striving to improve basic skills and knowledge of instrumental music for winds and percussion instruments.
Symphonic: Performing group for advancing students.
Chorus
Training in basic vocal techniques with special emphasis on the changing voice; study of basic music theory; singing in three- and four-part harmony; development of performance skills.
Dance
8th Grade only: This class develops classical dance technique drawn from both ballet and modern dance. We work on flexibility and strength training. This technique training is adapted for both novice and experienced dancers. We explore the major choreographers of the 20th century Broadway and Hollywood stage, also incorporating the multi-cultural and "street" dance influences that are prevalent in today's society.
Drama
6th grade: This class is designed to create a stronger and more detailed awareness of the world around you through the development of listening, concentration and observation skills. We work together in groups to create ensemble theatre pieces and work individually to create original characters. We develop tools to help with interpreting music, text and movement.
7th grade: A detailed study of the techniques and skills required to create ensemble theatre pieces based on music, movement and text. We learn to analyze and create characters and how to analyze a play script and develop and present scenes. Through the development of these areas we continue to develop and sharpen our awareness of the world around us.
8th grade: Analyzing character motivation, developing transition between acting activities to an appreciation of the entire theatrical experience - technical elements, performance aspect, and audience participation.
Orchestra
Two levels appropriate to age and skills are offered for sixth, seventh and eighth graders.
Prelude: Basic performance technique; music reading skills.
Junior Chamber: Developing technique through ensemble performance.
Public Speaking
8th grade only: Research skills; outlining; speech form; rehearsing; presentation.
