Fellowship

Excellent preparation is critical for a person to develop and use the skills needed to be a good teacher. However, excellent preparation is only the first step to becoming an accomplished teacher. Good teachers need to know their content, know about their students’ learning styles, understand how to design meaningful assessments that act as teaching tools, develop good communication skills that actively engage all students, choose from a variety of techniques that enrich the learning environment, and convey a passion for their subject.

The goal of the fellowship program is to help new teachers develop a firm foundation that sets them on the path towards excellence. New teachers will:

  • receive the emotional and professional support they need in the critical early years,
  • develop sound instructional practices,
  • learn effective classroom management techniques,
  • discuss the research that informs us about how students effectively learn,
  • talk about interpersonal dynamics that are a rich part of a teacher’s school life,
  • collaborate with others regarding the central questions that inform us about what it means to be a good teacher.

The Center for Teaching is committed to mentoring people interested in the teaching profession. Under the guidance of expert instructors, teaching fellows will learn and practice the craft of teaching. They will be expected to observe other teachers, prepare lessons, teach, participate in supervision seminars, and be involved in other Center for Teaching initiatives. The extent and nature of the teaching assignment will evolve out of the relationship between the mentor and fellow. If the teaching fellow has an interest in co-curricular activities, such as athletics, every effort will be made to make connections to those programs.

All fellows must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. The fellowship is a yearlong experience. Fellows will practice at Drew Charter School and The Westminster Schools. Fellows will earn a salary in line with a beginning teacher’s salary and receive other faculty benefits provided by The Westminster Schools.
