Swimming and Diving Teams Capture State Championships

The swimming and diving team clinched both the boys and girls state championship titles Saturday evening.

The boys team finished with 543 points, far ahead of second-place Calhoun with 269 points. The girls team won with 358 points, ahead of runner-up Greater Atlanta Christian with 222 points.

The competition began on Thursday with the diving finals. Santiago Morales '18 and Charlie Greene '18 finished second and third, respectively, in the boys 1-meter final. On the girls side, Tori Penn '20 placed tenth overall.

At the swimming finals Saturday, the boys 200-yard medley relay team of Aidan Linkins '19, Cole Hinkes '20, Chris Staley '18, and Connor Hinkes '20 finished in second (1:37.76). The girls team, Eliza Normark '19, Tara Pillai '19, Virginia Hatcher '21, and Cecie Bassett '19 placed second (1:53.04).

In the 50-yard freestyle event, Jack Stone '18 came in second (20.84). Eliza Normark '19 finished first in the in the girls race with a time of 23.61.

Jack Stone '18 came in first in the boys 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.71. In the girls 500-yard freestyle, Samantha Bertschi '21 placed first, finishing in 5:03.04.

The team of Cole Hinkes '20, Connor Hinkes '20, Chris Staley '18, and Jack Stone '18 won the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team finished in 1:24.62 and captured All-American honors. The girls 200-yard freestyle relay team—Amy Zhao '21, Cecie Bassett '19, Kelsey Yao '18, and Samantha Bertschi '21—finished second with a time of 1:39.74.

In the boys 400-yard free relay event, Jack Stone '18, Grayson Harralson '19, Bryan Weselman '18, and Dylan Vroon '19 finished in 3:09.50, placing first. The girls 400-yard free relay team—Amy Zhao '21, Kelsey Yao '18, Samantha Bertschi '21, and Eliza Normark '19—also finished first with a time of 3:36.36.

The 2018 titles are the 25th and 22nd titles for the boys and girls programs, respectively. The GHSA state swimming and diving championship was held at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center. Full results can be found online.
