Dear Westminster Community,
Last Sunday, I wrote to the entire Westminster community expressing our shock and grief over the killing of George Floyd, the most recent in a long history of similarly horrific events impacting Black lives in our country. In that letter, I pledged that Westminster would continue—and build upon—our efforts to face honestly the realities of racial injustice toward Black Americans and to grow into a more inclusive community for all.
We know that our pledge calls us to resist passivity and take action in the face of complex and systemic issues of racism whether in our nation or on our campus. In the days since that letter, we have joined with many of you in considering more deeply the human and moral consequences of neglecting these issues for so long in our country. We have remained connected to students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni to ensure that we hear their voices as we move forward in this work. Countless members of the Westminster community have reached out for conversation and offers of help—all of which we will need, and more, to make progress together.
From all of our reading, listening, and dialogue, we have heard a robust set of ideas for how we might make our promise a reality. We look forward to the whole Westminster community joining this conversation to hear additional insights on how we can best advance this critical work.
I hope you will join me for such a conversation in the coming weeks. I invite you to participate in one of the three virtual opportunities below:
- Thursday, June 11, at 10:00 a.m. EDT
- Friday, June 12, at 12:00 p.m. EDT
- Tuesday, June 16, at 7:00 p.m. EDT
Please visit a new access point on our website to register for these sessions and to reference further information about the School’s efforts.
I remain grateful for your involvement in the life of our School and have only grown in my belief in the power of our work together.
NOTE: This email was sent Saturday, June 6, to all Westminster alumni, parents, past parents, and grandparents with valid email addresses on record.
