Debate Students Excel at Recent Competitions

The Westminster debate team picked up several accolades recently at competitions in the Southeast.

At Emory University's 65th annual Barkley Forum for High Schools, four students—George Alford '20, Holland Bald '21, Sara Ann Brackett '20, and Benjamin Sayers '22—reached the quarterfinals. In a field of more than 200 students from 23 states, Holland was ranked the 13th best individual speaker.

George and Sara Ann took second place at Pace Academy's 25th annual Justin G. Wilson Debates, a small and exclusive invitational held January 22-23.

Charlotte Baugher '22 and Finn Walsh '22 earned a coveted bid to the Tournament of Champions (TOC) by reaching the semifinals of the Samford University Bishop Guild debates. Sophomores rarely qualify for the TOC and Westminster currently has three.

Westminster leads the nation in qualifying bids to compete at the Tournament of Champions. As of early February, ten students have earned TOC bids by reaching designated late elimination rounds at nationally-recognized competitions a total of 18 times this year, more than any other school in the country. The tournament is scheduled for April 18-20 at the University of Kentucky.
