The Westminster debate team topped the leaderboard at the 2018 First and Second Year Debate National Championship, held at Woodward Academy March 23-25.
The first year policy debate teams of Rishi Manghat '21 with Benjamin Sayers '22 and Aaron Yu '21 with Connor Li '21 closed out the finals, taking the top two spots after winning their respective semifinal rounds. Rishi was the top individual speaker and Benjamin was the second-place speaker. These students, along with Jordan Kopcha '21 and Eula Doele '22, also closed out Georgia's first-year state championship in February, where Sam Pavur '21 was undefeated and top individual speaker in the second-year division.
In the second year division at Woodward, George Alford '20 and Holland Bald '21 reached the sweet sixteen, also known as the octafinals. This pair has also already earned a coveted "bid" to the national Tournament of Champions by reaching the late elimination rounds at a competition at Samford University in January.
