The Upper School chess team won the 2019 Georgia High School Team Chess Championships at Emory University on Saturday, March 9.
The team—Albert Liang '20, Anand Srinivasan '21, Stephen Eisenhauer '19, Gavin Zhou '21, Victor Hesu '22, Ashwin Pillai '21, and Tara Pillai '19—competed against 30 of the top teams from across Georgia and finished undefeated with a 5-0 record.
The team format has five players from one school competing against five players from the opposing school. A team needs three wins on the boards to win the round.
In addition, Albert, Anand, and Stephen won all of their games and received individual trophies for their performances.
Albert, Anand, Stephen, and Arthur Guo '24 will compete at the U.S. Chess Federation's 2019 National High School (K-12) Championship. The tournament will be held in Schaumburg, Illinois March 15-17.
