Christian Flournoy '23 made history by winning Harvard's annual international debate tournament Friday, July 10.
Christian and his debate partner, Madison Webb, won the third consecutive championship for the Harvard Diversity Project team, making Christian the youngest Black male student and Madison the first Black female student to ever win the tournament. The pair won with a perfect 5-0 ballot in the final round.
The Harvard Diversity Project is a nationally acclaimed program that recruits Black youth in Atlanta to train and matriculate into Harvard’s summer residency on full scholarships. The team is led by Brandon P. Fleming, Harvard's assistant debate coach.
Students on the team spend 10 months prepping for the debate tournament and two weeks in a Harvard Debate Council residency during the summer. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the residency and tournament were held virtually.
