This course introduces students to the books of the Jewish Bible from the perspective of ancient Israel as God’s covenant community. Atlanta is heralded as the “the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement.” From 1940 to 1970, the city became the epicenter for the movement as black leaders fought for voting rights, access to public facilities and institutions, and economic and educational opportunities for African Americans. Local public figures like Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Former Ambassador Andrew Young, and Congressman John Lewis rose to national and international prominence through their contribution to the nonviolent struggle for equal rights. This course explores the history of the Civil Rights Movement in Atlanta through guest speakers, history, art, music, movies, and field trips. During daily excursions, students will visit the Martin Luther King National Historical Park, King’s birth home, the King Center, Ebenezer Baptist Church, the APEX Museum, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Carter Center, and more.

In Naturalism Through Photography, students will earn elective course credit through three intense weeks of learning the art of photography while traveling between local forest preserves, Georgia's scenic mountains, and the stunning Olympic National Park in the Pacific Northwest. The course will include a study of the unique plants in each region, the ways in which they survive and thrive in their particular environment, and how to identify them in the wild. Participants will use the photography skills and techniques taught in the course to capture images that will accompany their writings in a student-generated book on the nature of the sites we visit as a class. No prior photography or naturalism experience is required. This course will involve research, writing, photography, design, and hiking in potentially strenuous terrain.

In this introductory-level AP Computer Science class, students have the opportunity to learn about the applications of programming in the modern world. Topics may include computer security, internet protocol, big data, and algorithms. The first half will be focused primarily on conceptual topics within computer science and the second half will be focused on learning the basics of coding in Java. Since this five-week class moves at an accelerated pace, previous coding experience (formal or informal) is required. 

Prerequisite: Introduction to Coding recommended or instructor approval.

Please note: There will be four additional Wednesday morning sessions during the 2023-24 school year. Students must take the College Board AP exam in the spring of 2024.

Honors Organic Chemistry is the study of the structures, syntheses, and reactions of carbon-containing compounds. Applications range from drug discovery to the manufacturing of plastics. The course focuses on nomenclature, isomerism, and properties and reactions of organic compounds. Reaction mechanisms and molecular structure determination are also emphasized. 

Prerequisite: Honors Biology/Chemistry or AP Biology/Chemistry. This four-week class moves at an accelerated pace, and enrollment is limited.

The Summer Creative Writing Institute is an application-based program open to Atlanta high school students. This institute is intended for serious writers looking to hone their craft in a safe and challenging community, make long-term connections with other writers, and start or enhance their writing portfolios. This course is ideal for the student who is transitioning from on-level Precalculus to AP Calculus AB or those who completed Honors Precalculus and simply want a refresher before starting AP Calculus AB in the fall. The course will provide students with the opportunity to brush up on analytical skills necessary for success in an AP math course as well as work on proper mathematical notation and efficient problem-solving techniques. Four areas will be emphasized: (1) algebraic skills, (2) graphing skills, (3) a trigonometry refresher, and (4) an introduction to limits.

Three areas will be emphasized: (1) numeracy, (2) a refresher of presumed algebra knowledge, and (3) organizational strategies for multi-step problems.

Four areas will be emphasized: (1) numeracy, (2) algebraic skills, specifically pertaining to linear equations, (3) a refresher of presumed geometry knowledge, and (4) organizational strategies for multi-step problems.

Four areas will be emphasized: (1) numeracy, (2) algebraic skills, (3) graphing skills, and (4) using the TI-nSpire calculator.
