uPPer School Curriculum

For students who want to learn more than facts.

Upper School academics broaden students’ horizons through interactive teaching, conversation and discussion, and hands-on experimentation. Our curious students are supported by dedicated faculty who help them conquer new challenges and discover new joys. Students find their passions in any number of disciplines—and no matter where their specific interests lie, Westminster says “yes” to their desire to learn more and apply their knowledge.

About Our Weekly Schedule

Students take seven classes on a rotating basis, which allows for enhanced learning opportunities such as fieldwork and intensive study. Each week includes time for class, club, and community meetings, as well as Office Hours both during and after the school day.

College Counseling

The McCamish Family College Counseling Center is home to our team of college counselors. Each student is paired with a counselor who provides tailored strategies and advice throughout the application process, guiding students toward making choices that serve their current needs and future aspirations.

Academic Highlights

24 Advanced Placement Courses

Westminster was a pioneer in creating the Advanced Placement program in the United States, serving as a pilot school for the program that offers college credit to students who complete advanced coursework and score at least a 3 out of 5 on the corresponding national exam. Now, Westminster offers 24 such classes across disciplines, plus honors-level classes.

Robust Arts Offerings

In addition to extracurricular opportunities, Upper Schoolers build themselves as artists with courses in vocal and instrumental music, 2D and 3D visual art, and theatre. One arts course is required for graduation, but many students choose to pursue further coursework. Students also have the opportunity to explore the arts during JanTerm, with courses like Music and the Movies, Culture of Entertainment, and Southern Visions: Folk Art.

Fellows Programs

The Upper School Fellows Program combines scholarship, leadership, and service. Students earn academic credit for application-based year-long programs in writing, innovation, civil dialogue, and civic engagement. All academic fellows share their expertise with other students, contributing to the intellectual vibrancy of the Upper School.

Student-Teacher Connections

Upper School faculty members are experts in their fields. More importantly, they are invested in their students’ educational journeys. Our class schedule includes weekly Advisement, when teachers meet with small groups of students for connection, guidance, and checking in, as well as Office Hours, when faculty members are available to give extra guidance, answer questions, and help students rise to their potential.

Off-Campus Opportunities

In addition to short-term global programs, Westminster students may choose to participate in year- or semester-long programs outside the city of Atlanta. Westminster partners with School Year Abroad for homestay-based learning across Europe; Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki for experiential learning rooted in the natural environment; and The Oxbow School in Napa, California, for arts-focused year and semester experiences.

Through the Global Online Academy, I have been able to take classes that aren’t taught at Westminster, connect with students from other countries, and learn how to learn outside of school. I have found lots of uses for the things I have learned!Foster B., Class of 2024
