College Counseling

Where care meets strategy.

Our team of college counselors is dedicated to guiding every Wildcat through the college selection and application process. Looking for a small liberal arts school? They’ve got you covered. The college with the best mechanical engineering program? They’ll help you there, too. The perfect blend of care for each student and effective strategies for admissions sets our college counseling program apart. Our counselors encourage every student to find the best-fit college or university, then help them get there.

The Westminster College Counseling Team has a structured approach that provides excellent guidance enabling students and parents to craft an appropriate path in their college application journey. Our counselor was meticulous, empathetic, and professional, and significantly assisted our son in exploring possible choices and completing a strong application accentuating all of our child's accomplishments. Our son ultimately garnered multiple college options, enabling him to confidently make the best choice for his ambitions."

Advising Students and Parents

The college counselors co-advise the senior class, building individual college lists with respect to family parameters including cost, distance, location, and other discussed factors. Counselors discuss strategies and advice regarding competitive applications, standardized testing options, early admission, Honors programs, and merit scholarships.

Working Through the Application Process

Counselors hold a mock interview evening for seniors in the early fall and provide close consultation regarding essays and a full proofreading of all shared application paperwork.

Visits From College Representatives

Each year, Westminster hosts more than 180 college representatives who answer students' questions and build relationships with our counselors.

College Counseling Events

The department hosts several events during the year, including College Day, which provides informational programming for parents and a college fair for students, with more than 200 colleges in attendance. The College Deans program highlights trends and preparation for underclassmen and the Paying for College program discusses the financial aspects of college.

Cross-Department Partnerships

Counselors have ongoing partnerships with Westminster’s athletics staff regarding potential varsity recruitment and with visual and performing arts faculty regarding supplements and auditions.

External Relations

Externally, members of the department hold positions as President of the National Association of College Admissions Counseling and as Deputy Executive Director of the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools. Counselors have recently served as advisory board members for university admission offices, including Chicago, Fairfield, Furman, Georgia, Mercer, Michigan, Oglethorpe, Southern Methodist, and Young Harris.
